![]() ![]() You can make an unlimited number of notes. You can insert checklists and even do nested checklists for multi-level lists. With Simplenote, you’ve got basics like spell check. Use Simplenote for your text, and then put any media files in cloud storage. This could be Google Drive, iCloud, Dropbox, Microsoft OneDrive or any other favorite. Instead, you can use Simplenote alongside a cloud storage system so you have easy access to all your class files. Without the capacity for rich media, Simplenote won’t be a singular holding container for all of your academic material. There also isn’t optical character recognition or other high-tech tools. This means you can’t add images, voice memos, PDFs, Powerpoint slides or screenshots taken by a web clipper. Unlike many other note taking apps, Simplenote doesn’t support multimedia. What Can’t Simplenote Do, and Are There Workarounds? Plus, there’s an open API so you can use it to build what you need. Simplenote also offers web access so you can access your notes without having to download any software. The support for Linux is especially helpful for computer science students who want access to their information without having to deal with a dual boot. Simplenote has both mobile apps and desktop apps for iOS, Android, macOS, Windows and Linux. This note-syncing is an advantage over a plain text editor, where your notes live locally on a single device. Just set up an account and you can access your class notes from your phone, tablet or computer. Like many other apps and platforms, Simplenote uses the cloud to provide multi-device access to your information. The Advantages of Simplenote Sync and Multi-Device Access For these programs, students might get more benefit from an app like Apple Notes, which has some useful features for digital handwriting. On the other hand, Simplenote probably isn’t the right choice for your focus in college is on math, science or other programs that incorporate images or drawing. This can be majors such as history, English and computer science, for example. However, when it comes to classwork, Simplenote is especially relevant for students in programs that focus on words and text. To compare note-taking app features and decide which note-taking you should use in school, check out our recommendations for the best note-taking apps for students in 2020.įor all students, Simplenote can be a great way to track the minutiae of life. For example, Evernote and Google Keep can transcribe a photo of a class whiteboard into typed text. Other note-taking apps offer high-tech features that really can make student life easier. Who Benefits the Most from Simplenote’s Note Taking Approach?Īdmittedly, this streamlined approach to college note taking isn’t for everyone. It’s a blank canvas for information and ideas. If Simplenote’s bare-bones approach isn’t enough, the app also has Focus Mode which further strips down the interface into only the essentials. You can use the app in random bursts to jot down project ideas or reminders, and its simplicity is helpful when brainstorming for your term paper. When taking notes during class, you can pay closer attention to the topic of the lecture. Interfaces are built around Hick’s Law, which can calculate the ratio of how much longer it will take a user to make a decision when there are more choices available.īecause Simplenote keeps it simple, there is an opportunity for students to focus on what really matters. Voluntary simplicity has been applied to app design, specifically to the user experience. A famous example of this theory is how Steve Jobs wore the same outfit every day to combat decision fatigue. Scientists and researchers have found that too many choices can be overwhelming, tiring, paralyzing, and can prevent us from focusing on what’s most important. However, there’s science behind why limiting choice can be helpful to students. Let’s take a look at why something so simple can be so helpful in college and how students can make the most of Simplenote. When you have the basics that you need without the clutter, you may be able to stay focused on your classwork.Įven though Simplenote doesn’t offer many features, TechCrunch called it “the planet’s most useful piece of software.” It’s more lightweight than many other note-taking apps, but it can be used for “just about everything, from shopping lists to the Great American Novel.” The note-taking app is built around the idea that sometimes more isn’t always better. ![]() It’s essentially black text on a white page that can sync across all your devices. Instead of touting frills, features and add-ons, Simplenote is streamlined. The note-taking app Simplenote is a little different from the other popular options. ![]()

![]() ![]() I was already a user of the previous Railmodeller version before then. It took me only 5 minutes to plan a recent layout update.įull disclaimer: I was offered a free copy of this software in exchange of this unbiased reviewed. If you’re a Mac User and are looking for something easy to use, RailModeller Pro is the only serious choice I know about. As any Mac software solution should, it focuses on user-friendliness and productivity…so we can start running real model trains as soon as possible! RailModeller Pro does not have any of the fancy functions some PC equivalents provide. Let’s be honest, track planning can be fun, but we want to leave the drawing board as soon as possible. ConclusionĪ nice and derailment-free layout deserves good planning. There are some free PC alternatives, but I am pretty sure they are not as easy to use as RailModeller Pro. It’s not free! But seriously, we all spend hundreds on locomotives and decoders: software is real work too! For example, I would like to be able to hide the left (library) and right (details) panels. RailModeller Pro is there to help you build your layout, not for you to visualise the tracks in context with houses, mountains… Unfortunately, there is no support for fancy landscapes elements as in other PC equivalents. No software is perfect, RailModeller Pro has some minor flaws.ģD view was added recently to RailModeller Pro. There are many other functions that I won’t detail here. You can get started immediately dragging and dropping tracks to the main area. It is still very easy to use once you get the hang of it. RailModeller Pro from the Mac App Store has brought some changes to the interface. To be slightly more specific, at the bottom of the View menu, make sure Show Right Hand Window is selected, then choose the Document tab in that window., Click on the arrow by Layout Info to expand that section and look for Total Track Length, and divide by two for a two-lane track, etc. Track stock management and required parts listings (including import/export as CSV files).3D view (recently added to RailModeller Pro), which isn’t really necessary but is pretty nice.Full scale (1:1) printing is great to lay the tracks perfectly in real life Powerful layout design with full track libraries from many manufacturers in many scales.RailModeller Pro has allowed me to go through the (never ending?) process of building and modifying a layout. It provides those essential functions: I had already showed what the old RailModeller could do, in many posts including here or here. There is now also a free version ( RailModeller Express) to try everything out. I had been using RailModeller for a while, and about a year ago, the developper released a new version for the Mac App Store: RailModeller Pro. There are quite a few alternatives for PC users, but Mac users don’t have many choices. In fact, in can even be fun if the software is easy to use. It’s even more important if you are planning to modify an existing layout. Arnold and Fleischmann used to sell specific rulers to help you with that, maybe they still do!īut seriously, planning your layout on a computer is essential, from the start. Many of us think they can go without properly planning their layout, or some people still use rulers and paper. Mac Users rejoice, you can properly plan a great layout! ![]() ![]() Certain I/O operations, however, don't work well with a buffer. Buffering makes functions like getChar() and putChar() fast, as they can operate on the memory buffer instead of directly on the device itself. This reduces the number of required device accessing calls, which are often very slow. Some subclasses, such as QFile and QTcpSocket, are implemented using a memory buffer for intermediate storing of data. QIODevice also handles access control for you, so you can safely assume that the device is opened in write mode if writeData() is called. QIODevice uses these functions to implement all its convenience functions, such as getChar(), readLine() and write(). Subclasses of QIODevice are only required to implement the protected readData() and writeData() functions. start( "gzip", QStringList() < < "-c") īy subclassing QIODevice, you can provide the same interface to your own I/O devices. For example, QProcess has a function called waitForStarted() which suspends operation in the calling thread until the process has started.Ĭalling these functions from the main, GUI thread, may cause your user interface to freeze.

![]() ![]() ![]() This means you can convert your existing vaults to Hub vaults and vice versa. Not only that, the recovery key is compatible with Cryptomator’s recovery key. This allows you to access your data in case of disaster. We didn’t stop there and released Cryptomator Hub 1.1.0 with recovery key support. It also helps that Hub is independent of your cloud storage provider, which means we have no access to either the key material or the cloud files. All key material remains locally on the client. Cryptomator Hub doesn’t store unencrypted keys. This is all possible because of the underlying zero-knowledge key management. You can focus on your work and your team. With managed instances, we will take care of deploying and maintaining your Hub instance, while ensuring that your instance is highly available. This includes updating the software, monitoring the instance, and keeping it secure. And if you have the knowledge, you still have to maintain the instance yourself. This requires a lot of knowledge about how to deploy a software container using Kubernetes or Docker Compose. Until now, you could only use the self-hosted version of Hub. Managed instances of Cryptomator Hub are a great way to start using Cryptomator Hub right away without having to deploy and maintain your self-hosted instance. ![]() We are working on automating this process, but we didn’t want to delay the release any longer. We are happy to announce that managed instances of Cryptomator Hub are now available! □ And we have released Hub 1.1.0 with recovery key support. Cryptomator Hub: Managed – Request Access Now Read more about this in the Cryptomator 1.7.0 blog post. Cryptomator for Android will support both modes of operation. You can continue to use your existing vaults as before, no action is required on your part. Starting with Cryptomator 1.8.0 for Android, we will follow our Desktop application: All newly created vaults will use AES-GCM instead of AES-CTR+HMAC for file content encryption. The other advantage is that this technique allows us to publish our app to stores like the main F-Droid repository, but sign it with our keys, which means we still have control over the signing keys.Ĭryptomator Lite can be built using the following Docker image and then compared to the corresponding releases: AES-GCM: New Default for Content Encryption This version is built using a reproducible build technique, which has two advantages: You as a user can verify that the published source code matches the published binary, which in turn means that we didn’t and couldn’t add anything during build time. Cryptomator Lite: Reproducible Build and F-DroidĪ less obvious change is that we now offer a new flavor: Cryptomator Lite. The most obvious change in this release is the migration to Material 3, which modernizes the user interface. □ In addition to the release notes, we’d like to give you more details about some changes. This release took quite some time, but we finally made it. As you may have already noticed, we released Cryptomator 1.8.0 for Android last month! It contains a lot of internal changes, a bunch of new features, and some bug fixes. ![]() ![]() It is very easy to use the Opera browser block ad tool.
